IPEDS GLOSSARY

Carnegie Classification: This is an update of the traditional classification framework developed by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education in 1970 to support its research program, and later published in 1973 for use by other researchers. Although this classification has undergone many changes over the years, the current release involves some significant changes from previous editions.

AANAPISI: Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander- Serving Institutions. Includes all institutions deemed eligible to apply for a grant for this program or a current grantee, both in category "AANAPISI" and "AANAPISI F" of the Office of Postsecondary Education’s Eligibility Matrix.

Carnegie Designation: An institutional classification coding structure developed by the Andrew W. Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The 2000 Carnegie Classification categorizes selected institutions as:

  • R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity

  • R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity

  • D/PU: Doctoral/Professional Universities

  • M1: Master's Colleges and Universities I

  • M2: Master's Colleges and Universities II

  • BD: Baccalaureate Colleges: Diverse Fields

  • BA: Baccalaureate Colleges: Arts & Sciences Focus

  • SFA: Special Focus Four-Year: Arts, Music & Design Schools

  • SFH: Special Focus Four-Year: Other Health Professions Schools

  • SFR: Special Focus Four-Year: Research Institutions

Emerging HSI: As defined by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

HBCU: Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

HSI: Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Institution: A term formerly used in IPEDS and HEGIS to define an institution that was accredited at the college level by an agency or association recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. These schools offered at least a one-year program of study creditable toward a degree and they were eligible for participation in Title IV Federal financial aid programs.

IPEDS Race/Ethnicity Groups: Categories developed in 1997 by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that are used to describe groups to which individuals belong, identify with, or belong in the eyes of the community. The categories do not denote scientific definitions of anthropological origins. The designations are used to categorize U.S. citizens, residents, and other eligible non-citizens [international]

MSI: Minority Serving Institutions

NASNTI: Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions.

Non-Tenure Track:–Personnel positions that do not lead to consideration for tenure

PBI: Predominantly Black Institutions.

Racially Minoritized (RM): historically minoritized students in STEM, specifically Blacks, Hispanics/Latinx, and American Indians/Alaskan Natives.

Sex: Male and Female

STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.

System: A university system is a network of affiliated universities governed by a central authority, promoting resource sharing and collaborative educational initiatives.

Tenure Status: Status of a personnel position with respect to permanence of the position.

Tenure-Track: Personnel positions that lead to consideration for tenure.

Year: A 12-month period defined by an institution for reporting a full year of activity (All institutions must use the July 1 - June 30 reporting period). This time period should be consistent across all IPEDS data collections and from year-to-year.
